I bit the bullet, as the saying goes, and divorced from XO Communications. I was with them for a little over twelve years. It is not easy to move an established webpage and blog over to a new server, it took me three days. I’m not going into a bash-fest, but encase one of their people reads this, here are the major reasons which caused me to switch. The final straw was XO not upgrading MySQL to version 5. This version is required to get the benefits from the newer versions of WordPress (blogging software). InMotion also offers a lot more features for a lot less money, I pay less than half what I paid before. Finally XO does not have 24 hour tech support. I needed help with transferring my three domain names I had registered through XO. InMotion offers round the clock tech support. The big piece of advice I have on switching hosting services; if you are waiting on an email from your old web hosting service don’t change where your domain name points until you get the email. My email was down for about an hour. Not only down, it kicked the emails back to the sender during that time. I was a long supporter of XO, they might meet your needs so give them a try if you like. Shop around and check the reviews, that is what I did.
Occupy Wall Street in Portland
Here in Portland, Oregon we have are own little version of occupy some city. I drove by the “CAMP” to see what it looked like. To me it seems like an excuse for a bunch of bums to build a tent community in the middle of Portland. Time to paaarty!! The headlines today had two more people arrested, these on outstanding warrants. It’s funny the contrast of the people making statements on the news and those you see crawling out of the depths of the tent enclosure. Those on the television look clean and decent, the others don’t.
I spent 20 years of my life in the Navy protecting the right of people to organize and express their views under the First Amendment. I support their right to get their message out. However, to set aside the legalities of how they are protesting, is this the best the Left has to offer. Anybody who can’t see the Occupy Movement is the Left’s countermeasure to the Tea Party is blind. The Libs saw how well the Tea Party worked and decided to give it a go. Unfortunately they don’t have very respectable people on their side. Look at the mess they are making. I’d bet someone a cup of coffee and a donut the park is not as clean as they found it when they leave. The Tea Party is known for their thoughtfulness and cleanliness of the areas they gather. I took a video of the two block shanty-town as I drove by. At best I’d describe it as disgusting. I’ll have to see if I can post the video. It’s amazing the damage being down and how little they care about it.
But here is another example of how a liberal city let’s things go. It would be nice if they tried one of their occupy movements in a more conservative area. I understand why they don’t go in and arrest the whole bunch of them. It would be chaos. The cops would be the bad guys, people would be hurt and I’m sure the city would be sued. So we’ll put up with these encampments in the middle of our cities. Lose the ability of the common man or woman to enjoy a stroll through the park on their lunch breaks. All for a group of people who don’t have a unified message.
Who Thinks the Middle East Wants Peace?
Is there anyone out there who thinks peace in the Middle East can realistically be obtained? I see only two ways peace can be established. The first being we let a complete tyrant take charge of the entire area. One willing to kill off whole towns if needed to keep the peace. The second is if we kill every last one of them. Both ideas are extreme, but in an area controlled by fanatics, what more can you do? If the United States pulled all their troups and businesses out and the Jews left Israel I would bet there still wouldn’t be peace. Look at Iraq. The different factions are blowing each other up. It’s a group of uneducated individuals controlled by people who have no respect for human life.
I wonder when the U.S. will ever learn not to meddle in the affairs of state in that area. We basically removed a tyrant in Lybia at the barrel of a gun. What did we replace him with? A government reportly guided by Sharia Law. That should set the region back a thousand years or so in freedoms. People in the United States forget how great we have it. If the “Occupy Wall Street” movement happened in Iran the protesters would all arrested and never seen again. There are times I really like the flat-black and glows approach Middle East Peace policy. Good luck Libya…
Why Do We Trust Them With Our Money?
Once again a govenmental organization “discovers” money it doesn’t have alloted for something specific. Instead of saving it for emergencies, transferring it to an area that is short on money or even better, returning it to the tax payers, they spend it. Of course this money is usually “found” when someone has a pet project which needs funding. The best thing Portland’s Bureau of Transportation can find to spend a couple million dollars on is a bicycle sharing program, really? For you great minds that run our cities and are responsible to safe guard our tax money is this the best idea you can come up with? Portland has the Sellwood bridge, it’s rated a two on a scale of one hundred, wouldn’t that be a good thing to put the money towards. Or, we could put some people to work repairing roads. I bet if you ask a hundred drivers, people who paid the gas taxes in the first place, they could come up with quite a few better ideas than a bicycle sharing program. Thanks for wasting even more of our money!
Kip Kinkel
In May 1998, at the ripe old age of 15, he murdered his parents and shot up Thurston High School in Springfield, Oregon, cause it was the thing to do. He left two students dead and 22 others wounded. He is currently being supported by our tax dollars, he is serving a 111-year sentence, without the possibility of parole. No he is crying, he’s spent a good chunk of the time since the shooting in juvy. He was transferred to the big house in 2007, around his 25th birthday. Now he wants to plead insane, real jail must be too hard for him. He was too weak to just kill himself when life proved too difficult. He killed his parents in killed or injured several students in an attempt to have the cops kill him. Why should we treat him special or give him anything? I hope he is some one’s play toy every night, (and that is the only nice way to put it). I despise this individual and hope his life is the most miserable thing imagined. His life needs to be an example of if you do wrong you pay the price. Screw him!
Blame the GOP
I think the banter going on between the President and the GOP is the final proof the democratic party can’t accomplish anything. I take that back, they are great at blaming the GOP for all the failures of the government. They had control of the House, Senate and Presidency and they couldn’t pass the budget. They pushed through a health care bill that will cripple the country, but they haven’t accomplished anything of value. Now that the GOP is trying to get us on the right track and attempt to get our spending under control the democrats are all fired up. “The evil GOP is going to take food out of grandma’s mouth, we won’t be able to afford her social security check!” Had they not wanted to look bad for the 2010 election they could have passed their budget and grandma could have been eating caviar. Of course the rest of us would have to eat Top Roman since our tax levels would have been through the roof. The democrats knew if they passed that kind of budget they would have lost even more seats. The President leads by saying bring me something I’ll sign. It’s like taking your family out to eat. You ask what they want and they say they don’t know. But everywhere you take them isn’t what they want. Grow a sack Mr. President, either learn to lead or get out. I can’t imagine what the next guy is going to “inherit” from you. I think it would be funny though if the next president stood on the podium and opens his first speech by complaining about the poor country he inherited. He then stops, smiles knowingly, and states in an authoritative tone that it’s his problem now, not some past administration’s fault, and he plans on fixing it. Unless of course a female, non-democrat wins, then she will fix it.
John Carter of Mars
I decided to try out the Nook app on my Android phone. It has been several years since I’ve read Edgar Rice Burroughs Martian Series. The first three books cost me 99 cents. I completely enjoyed these books, again. It’s hard to imagine the first volume of these books was published in 1917. I have to admit I like reading the books electronically. Whenever I had a couple of minutes I took out my phone and read several pages.
The main theme of the story line is John Carter, a Civil War Veteran, was in the mountains looking for gold when he was set upon by indians. After being chased into a cave where he is overcome by smoke from a mysterious source. While lying on the cave floor he is transported to the dying planet of Mars. In Mars lesser gravity John Carter is a superman. He can leap over opponents, run extremely fast and over perform extreme feats of swordsmanship. The books are well written with similar themes or goals, usually a beautiful girl in distress. The hero of the story overcomes the hardships and gets the girl. Read these, it’s well worth it.
EPA to Institute Tougher Emissions Standards
While on the campaign trail Obama gave many promises. Two that are relevant at the moment are no new taxes to the middle class and higher energy prices. I have to admire his underhanded way of fulfilling both by using the EPA. As EPA institutes tougher emissions standards power companies will have to install new pollution control equipment, retire power plants before their end of life, or develop new sources of energy. Solar and wind power gives the Greenies a warm spot in their hearts, but that is all they are good for. So what is going to happen? Basic economics. The energy companies will be forced in invest a ton of cash. Anybody with half a brain will know they will then pass that cost onto us, the users. Many of the users are middle class. The government will make money in the form of fees, permits, fines and other miscellaneous things. Lawyers will get rich fighting these ridiculous rules. Who pays? We all will, so maybe it’s an even way to take money from the people. No new taxes, higher energy prices, here’s to the government of the people, by the people and for the people.
A quick note on the picture, I snagged it off Foxnews. I thought it was funny. It’s labelled smokestacks but it looks more like cooling towers. That white fluffy stuff coming out is steam not smoke. I like Foxnews, but sometimes they need to edit their website a little better. Of course the number one green house gas is H2O…
Middle East Peace?
Anyone who reads my blog knows I’m a long supporter of Israel. I can’t think of anyone who deserve a place to call their own more than the Jews. Probably the most persecuted group of individuals in the history of man. Does anyone know why? The best explanation I’ve heard is they brought laws and morals to man, and chaotic society of the time despised them. From the Spanish Inquisition, the Nazis to Obama the Jews have been thrown under the bus. So far President Obama hasn’t suggested we set up camps to “house” the evil land grabbers. I bet something is in the works to limit their land and freedoms. My question is why are we willing to spend billions of dollars killing Libyans and supporting unknown groups in the Middle East but we won’t support the only successful democratic government in the area? The Muslim Brother hood will be the next Al Qaeda, we support them today, they attack us tomorrow.
Mississippi Flooding
I am sorry these homes are being flooding. But there is a reason I don’t wish to live along a major river like the Mississippi. I’m not against putting levies up to hold back the river and create excellent farmlands, but those lands are on the flood plain. You might not want to build your house there too. If you do it would be best to have an emergency plan on getting you and your valuables out quickly. I really don’t think the people who insist on living in these areas should have any help with their flood insurance. People who choose to live in a safer place should not have to help foot the bill for those who want to live along side rivers, or in their historic flood plains.
I read a book on the effects of global warming a couple of years ago. This guys point was it is going to happen, but we can lessen the effects by getting people to move away from the beaches where their houses will be flooded when the oceans rise the predicted twelve feet. (Of course the only way I believe the oceans will rise that much is from all the people who got rich, Al Gore, off the global warming hype, setting in their massive yachts in the ocean somewhere.) You do this by making it too expensive to live there. Don’t subsidize flood insurance for the barrier islands, or places like New Orleans. If you want to live in these beautiful places, pay the higher insurance or take a massive loss when Mother Nature washes your home away. Please don’t complain when it happens. Again I’m sorry you lost your house, but take the hint and move.
